Brunelleschi was born in Florence, Italy in 1377. He was one of the first to study how the ancient roman buildings were constructed.
He was born to Brunelleschi Di Lippo and Giuliana Spini and started his career as a goldsmith and sculptor. His father supported and apprenticed him as a goldsmith. Being handy with his hands helped him as a sculptor. In 1401, Brunelleschi was chosen to compete with Lorenzo Ghiberti for the construction of the second door for the church of San Giovanni. He created this amazing sculpture portraying the Sacrifice of Isaac out of bronze. While the council was judging their work, they offered Brunelleschi to be partners with Lorenzo to work on the project. He refused.

In 1418, Brunelleschi also built the dome of Florence. No one had been able to build something like that since the Ancient Romans. Work had started on the cathedral in 1294. The architects thought that the entire top would collapse inward. Brunelleschi built two layers worth of brick to give the extra support.
Brunelleschi died on April 15, 1446 and was buried in the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. Without filippo’s work, we wouldn’t have cathedrals like we have now.
